MENTOR

As a mentor, you will have the unique opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with a young person in need of guidance and support. By dedicating just two to four hours of your time twice each month, you can make a lasting difference in their lives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building a supportive relationship: Establish a trusting and respectful connection with your mentee, serving as a positive role model and confidant.
  • Providing guidance and encouragement: Assist your mentee in setting goals, developing life skills, and exploring their interests and aspirations. Offer guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback as they navigate challenges and opportunities.
  • Actively listening and offering advice: Be a patient and attentive listener, allowing your mentee to express their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations. Offer advice, share personal experiences, and provide constructive feedback when appropriate.
  • Engaging in positive activities: Plan and participate in engaging activities together, such as educational outings, recreational events, community service projects, or simply spending quality time talking and bonding.
  • Communicating with program coordinators: Maintain regular communication with Mentors for Youth of Dubois County staff to provide updates on your mentoring relationship, share concerns, and seek guidance or additional resources when needed.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Be at least 16 years old with a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and access to reliable transportation
  • Pass a background check and screening process
  • Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate reliability, commitment, and a genuine interest in supporting young people
  • Willingness to adhere to program guidelines and maintain confidentiality

Time commitment:

We ask mentors to commit to at least one year of volunteering and to spend two to four hours twice per month with their mentee. Flexibility is provided to accommodate mentor and mentee schedules.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to youth development and community engagement
  • Expertise or experience in one or more of the following areas: non-profit governance, strategic planning, finance and accounting, fundraising, marketing and public relations, legal, or youth services
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Ability to think strategically and make informed decisions
  • Willingness to commit time and effort to attend board meetings, committee meetings, and organizational events
  • Willingness to advocate for the organization and act in its best interests

Time commitment:

Board members are expected to serve a minimum term of three years and attend board meetings and committee meetings, which are typically held on a monthly basis. Additional time commitments may include events and occasional strategic planning sessions.

GENERAL OUTING SUPPORT

As a General Outing Support Volunteer, you will assist in planning, organizing, and executing outings and activities for our mentor-mentee pairs. Your role is to ensure the outings run smoothly and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

  • Mentor and mentee interaction: Foster a positive and inclusive environment during outings, encouraging mentor-mentee interactions and facilitating engaging conversations and activities. Help create opportunities for mentees to explore their interests, develop new skills, and gain confidence.
  • Record-keeping and feedback: Maintain accurate records of attendance and collect feedback from mentors, mentees, and other volunteers. Assist in evaluating the impact and effectiveness of outings to inform future planning.
